The Keto diet has been on the rise over the past couple years. It seems as if everywhere you look, someone is talking about keto or ketosis. In my opinion, this is rightfully so! The research coming out supporting the keto diet and its benefits are pretty amazing. The ketogenic diet is a low carb, high-fat diet that raises blood ketone levels and puts your body into ketosis. Ketosis is when your body is burning fat for fuel instead of carbs or glucose. For newbies, it can be hard to tell if you're actually in ketosis or not so today I am sharing 5 common signs that your body is in ketosis.

#1 Bad Breath

Yes, you read that right! Bad breath is caused by elevated ketone levels. It is specifically caused by acetone, a ketone that exits the body through urine and breath. Don't get too caught up on this side effect though, it can easily be taken care of by brushing your teeth, or using sugarless gum. Also, this side effect isn't permanent. It will go away after a few weeks on the diet.

#2 Weight Loss

Many people experience both short and long-term weight loss when eating a ketogenic diet.  Fast weight loss can occur in that first week which is usually due to stored carbs and water being used up. After the initial rapid drop in water weight, individuals should be on a path to continued weight loss as long as they are following the diet properly and also in a calorie deficit.

#3 Increased Ketones in Your Blood

The most accurate way to test if you're in ketosis is to check your blood ketone levels. This can be done using a specialized device that will measure your ketone levels by calculating the amount of BHB in your blood. BHB is short for beta-hydroxybutyrate, one of the primary ketones present in the bloodstream. Click here to get a device!

#4 Increased Ketones in the Breath or Urine

You can also test ketone levels in the breath or urine and although not as accurate as the blood test, is still used. Breathalyzers monitor acetone which is one of the three main ketones present during ketosis. Breathalyzers have been shown to be fairly accurate. Another option is to measure ketones through your urine using special indicator strips, this option is considered the least reliable.

#5 Appetite Suppression

Many of us feel a decrease in hunger when following a ketogenic diet. The reasons why this happen are still being studied but it has been suggested that following a keto diet may cause changes to your hunger hormones. In addition, ketones themselves may also affect the brain to reduce appetite.
