Keto Diet for Beginners

When I first heard about the keto diet there was so much information thrown my way that I felt really overwhelmed. All I wanted to know was the basics. Where do I begin? What do I eat?  That is why today I put together a few basics to help you get started on your ketogenic journey.
The first thing I learned about the keto diet was that I was going to want to keep my carbs between 20-25 net carbs a day. What's a net carb? That is when you take your carbs and subtract the fiber and sugar alcohols to get your net.

I also learned that I wanted to keep my diet around 70% fat, 25% protein, and 5% carbs. I use the My Fitness Pal app to help me keep track of this! Most of your carbs on this diet should be coming from green veggies such as spinach, kale, and collard greens.

Foods to avoid on the keto diet:
-breads -corn -oats -oatmeal -honey -syrup -potatoes -wheat -fruit
Let's talk about fruit...yes it is healthy but it is really high in natural sugars and carbs. If you need some fruit the best …

5 Signs That You're In Ketosis

The Keto diet has been on the rise over the past couple years. It seems as if everywhere you look, someone is talking about keto or ketosis. In my opinion, this is rightfully so! The research coming out supporting the keto diet and its benefits are pretty amazing. The ketogenic diet is a low carb, high-fat diet that raises blood ketone levels and puts your body into ketosis. Ketosis is when your body is burning fat for fuel instead of carbs or glucose. For newbies, it can be hard to tell if you're actually in ketosis or not so today I am sharing 5 common signs that your body is in ketosis.
#1 Bad Breath

Yes, you read that right! Bad breath is caused by elevated ketone levels. It is specifically caused by acetone, a ketone that exits the body through urine and breath. Don't get too caught up on this side effect though, it can easily be taken care of by brushing your teeth, or using sugarless gum. Also, this side effect isn't permanent. It will go away after a few weeks on t…

Recipe Thursday: Low Carb Waffles

I have been craving waffles for a while now, so when I came across this recipe I was all over it. Here's the deal, I am sharing two versions of this recipe. One version for my strict keto friends, and another version for my "keto-ish" vegan friends. The good thing about drinking exogenous ketones is that I don't need to eat a strict ketogenic diet 100% of the time to feel the effects of ketosis. So do with this recipe what you like, but I was pretty impressed with these healthy, lower carb waffles that I found here on The Big Man's World website!
Ingredients: (Original recipe) 4 tablespoonscoconut flour, sifted1 tablespoon granulated sweetener of choice1/4 tsp cinnamon1/4 tsp baking powderpinch sea salt 2/3 cup liquid egg whites (or 4 large egg whites)1/4 cup milk of choice 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tablespoon unsweetened applesauce 1 tsp. oil of choice Maple syrup/coconut butter to topVegan Option 1/4 cup oat flour (can sub for any wheat flour)1/2 scoop vanilla br…

Keto Kalm Tea: Be the Kalm you Wish to See

I live on a very noisy street. All hours of the night huge trucks go by loudly. I am also a very light sleeper. These two things together mean very limited quality sleep for me. That was until I found Keto Kalm tea!
What is it?
Formulated to soothe your body and clear your mind Keto Kalm tea can be taken during the day to provide a blissful calm and in the evenings to promote a smooth transition into deep, quality sleep. Actually, I wasn't waking up at all until morning when I woke up feeling completely rested and ready to take on the day. That was something I had been searching for. Keto Kalm tea is available in two flavors, chocolate &a…
