goal setting, new years resolutions, be still, 2018, how to, 6 tips to reach your goals

It's that time, the new year is here, the time where we reflect on our past year, think about our aspirations, and set goals for the upcoming year. Many people make plans to improve their health, happiness, and financial situation. That is all great and dandy, but how many people actually stuck with their resolutions last year? Sadly, not many. Only 12% of resolution-makers from last year actually succeeded. I'm not telling you this to depress you, I am sharing because in this post I am going to give you some tips that can help YOU be part of the 12% in 2018!

So what was it about that 12% that made them stick with it? Were they just born with a strong mindset? They had the right circumstances? They got lucky? No! These people took thought out, meaningful steps to ensure that they achieved their resolutions. They made their resolutions because they were things that were important to them, so they treated them that way! Did you know that people who set up step by step goals or share out loud with their friends and family are actually much more likely to achieve their goals than people who make no specific commitment or plan? It's true!

If you really want to achieve your goals in 2018 it is absolutely crucial that you set resolutions that are sincere and true to who you are and what you want. Today I am going to share with you 6 tips that will help you to make realistic goals for 2018 and to help you stick with them!

Tip #1 Get Specific With Your Goals

The biggest mistake you can make when setting your goals is making a really broad, non-specific goal like "I want to make more money" or "I want to lose weight". Don't get me wrong, those are great goals, but think of your goal as a destination that you were setting into the GPS of your mind. If you told your GPS to take you to Africa without saying specifically in Africa where you want to go, where you end up will be a shot in the dark. If you tell your GPS to take you to the pyramids in Luxor, Egypt, that's exactly where you are headed. Instead of saying "I want to lose weight" replace it with "I will lose 15 pounds by March 1st, 2018". The more specific, the better!

Tip #2 Write It Down

Now that you know your destination, write it down, and then also write down the steps you will take to get there. If I want to lose 15 pounds by March this is how I would write it out, "I will be 15 pounds lighter by March 1st, 2018. I will accomplish this by exercising 5 days a week, following a clean eating meal plan with one cheat night, and drinking more water". It's not enough to just say where you are going, you have to figure out how you will get there so that you can make it happen! Not having a step by step plan to reach your goal can be overwhelming and frustrating causing you to think negatively and give up, no one wants that! So write it down, and figure out your action steps.

Tip #3 Make Time

Let's face it, we could all use extra time in the day, but the excuse of not having time doesn't cut it when you have goals. If you want something bad enough, you will make time for it. So your first step is to eliminate the excuse that you don't have time, and your second step is to make the time. You might have to wake up earlier, go to bed later, miss your favorite weekly t.v. show, but if you want to reach your goals, that is what's necessary. In addition to just making the time, schedule it on your calendar. So you want to lose 15 pounds by March by exercising 5 times a week? When will you be exercising? Is it in the morning before work? on your lunch break? On your way home? When it is, doesn't matter as much as scheduling it and then showing up!

Tip #4 Believe in Yourself!

One thing is for sure, if you don't believe in yourself, it's not going to happen. Thoughts are energy, and energy is everything. If you don't believe that you will reach your goal, you won't reach your goal. The fact of the matter is, negative self-talk is part of just human nature, but that doesn't mean you have to accept it. Find yourself constantly putting yourself down and sabotaging your goals? Watch the video below and start believing in yourself! The difference between unsuccessful and successful people is belief and using failures to propel yourself forward. Stop being your own worst enemy and start being your own biggest fan! You got this!!

Tip #5 Get A Partner

The sad truth is, we are way more likely to let ourselves down than to let others down. Having a group, partner, friend, or professional to help you stay on track is huge when reaching your goals. Find people that have similar goals to yours and hold each other accountable. When one of you is off track, the other can pick you back up and vice versa. Finding a support group to help me reach my health and fitness goals was what kept me going and ultimately got me to my goal. If getting healthy is one of your resolutions, join my next accountability group! I would be happy to support you along with a group of people who have likeminded goals.

Tip #6 Be Still

Over the next year, life is going to happen. There will be times where you feel stressed, depressed, overwhelmed...that is just life. The key is to not let life knock you off track. One way to make that happen is by not letting your thoughts take over and constantly reconnecting with yourself. I did this by implementing meditation into my daily activities. Using guided meditations through an app called Insight Timer really help me in that aspect. If meditation isn't your thing, try yoga, a daily thought journal, or even just getting out and taking a walk in nature to gather your thoughts. The more practice you have being still and calm in your thoughts, the more patience you will have while working toward your goals.

At the end of the day, you are more than capable of reaching whatever it is that you want, but that won't happen if you don't take the steps to get there. If you want it bad enough, you will do what it takes! Now go ROCK 2018!
